Tbilisi airport to Batumi: the drive, the price, and when not to

A Tbilisi airport to Batumi transfer is about 375 kilometres and five and a half hours on the road, priced as a full day. What it costs, when the train or a night in Tbilisi makes more sense, and when to book a different flight.

Plenty of trips to the Georgian coast begin at the other end of the country. Tbilisi International sits southeast of the capital and Batumi is on the Black Sea, so a taxi from Tbilisi airport to Batumi is not a short ride. It is a crossing of the whole country: about 375 kilometres and roughly five and a half hours on the road.

So the first question is not the fare. It is whether the landing time makes the drive sensible at all, and, if the flight is not booked yet, whether Tbilisi is the right airport.

The drive from the terminal

The car has to get past Tbilisi first, because the airport is 17 kilometres southeast of the city and the road to the coast leaves it to the west. After that it is the S1 past Gori and Khashuri, through the Rikoti section, and on past Kutaisi to Samtredia, where the S12 turns off through Guria to the sea.

The Rikoti section used to be the slow part. Its 52 kilometres of new four-lane road, with 51 tunnels, fully opened at the end of December 2025, and officials say it roughly halved the time through the pass. How the Rikoti highway changed the map is a longer story. For this trip it means the old mountain crawl is gone.

Route planners put the run from the terminal at between four and a half and five and a half hours. Allow about five and a half hours of driving, and six or more with a proper stop. Those are figures for an open road.

What a Tbilisi airport to Batumi transfer costs

We price Batumi as a full day, because the car and driver spend the day going there and coming back. The day rate is 1 350 ₾ for the seven-seat V-Class, 1 500 ₾ for the S-Class, and 2 500 ₾ for either Maybach.

A standard day is eight to nine hours with one driver, door to door. A day that runs longer is quoted with the extra hours already included, at 135, 150 or 250 ₾ an hour depending on the car, and the total is confirmed in writing before the car is dispatched. What separates the day-rate tiers is set out separately.

This is a different job from the flat airport fare, which covers the run between the terminal and any address in Tbilisi. Batumi is outside it.

The day rate is also several times what a taxi costs. Local travel guides put a taxi or plain transfer for the whole car between the two cities at roughly 300 to 450 ₾. Booking an app car for a run of five and a half hours has its own failure points, which the piece on ride-hail at Tbilisi airport goes through. For one or two people with light bags and a daytime landing, the taxi or the train is a perfectly sound choice.

Landing late: sleep in Tbilisi, drive in daylight

Do the arithmetic before booking anything. A flight that lands at six in the evening puts the car on the road around seven and into Batumi after midnight. One that lands at nine gets there at about half past three in the morning, after a flight and five and a half hours in a car, to a hotel room that is only ready at that hour if it was booked from the night before.

The hotel night gets paid either way. Spent in Tbilisi, it buys a proper sleep and a daylight drive after breakfast, with time to stop on the way. The four ways from Tbilisi to Batumi covers what the road offers between the two cities, from Gori to Kutaisi.

That plan is two bookings rather than one: the fixed fare from the terminal into the city, which the piece on Tbilisi airport transfer costs lays out, and the Batumi day the next morning. As a rule, anything landing after about six in the evening is worth pricing both ways.

The train, if the landing time fits

Rail is the cheap alternative worth taking seriously. From the terminal, the airport’s 337 bus runs to Station Square, home of the central railway station, for one lari, between about seven in the morning and eleven at night.

The train itself now takes about four hours, down from five and a half, after Georgian Railway finished track work on the line this summer. The catch is frequency. The railway’s published schedule lists two daily fast trains each way, and extra trains are added on some busy summer dates. The landing has to line up with one of them, with time to cross the city in between, so check the current times close to the date.

For a couple with light bags landing in the morning, the train is the better trip, and the saving is most of the day rate. Coaches and minibuses run too, at roughly 30 to 45 ₾ a seat, but they leave from Ortachala and Didube bus stations in the city rather than from the airport, and they take five to seven hours.

If the flight is not booked yet

The shortest Batumi transfer starts at Batumi. Batumi’s own airport sits about two kilometres south of the city, so the ride to the hotel is minutes rather than hours. Kutaisi, the other western airport, is about two hours from Batumi by road, and the roads out of Kutaisi cover that run properly.

There is also a domestic hop in season. Georgian Airways added a Tbilisi to Batumi flight four times a week for summer 2026, about an hour in the air, and Tbilisi airport’s departures board for 27 October 2026 listed no Batumi flight. It is a seasonal service, so check the schedule for your dates before building an arrival around it.

And if the trip covers both the coast and the capital, fly into one and out of the other. That removes one crossing of the country entirely, and choosing between the Georgian airports makes the longer case for it.

Batumi to Tbilisi airport, for the flight home

The reverse run needs more margin, because the deadline is now at the far end. Tbilisi airport’s check-in guidance is to arrive two hours before the flight, and international check-in usually closes an hour before departure.

Add five and a half hours of road, a stop, and the capital’s traffic at the end, and the car should leave Batumi about eight hours before the flight. For a 15:00 departure that means leaving at 07:00. For anything before about eleven in the morning, the better plan is to drive the day before and sleep in Tbilisi. The quote for this direction is confirmed in writing before the car is dispatched, like every other.

Families, luggage and the seven-seat car

Our S-Class and both Maybachs take three guests each. The V-Class takes seven, and for a family of four with a week of luggage on a drive of five and a half hours, it is the only one of the four cars we run that fits. It is also the cheapest day of the three tiers, at 1 350 ₾, so the largest car in the fleet costs the least.

The train is a harder sell at that size: four people and their bags onto a city bus, through a station, onto a platform, and into another car at the far end. When four travellers change the arithmetic makes the same point beyond this route.

Send the flight number and the Batumi address to booking@soitblack.com, and the quote comes back in writing, with any extra hours already counted.
